Pickup Lines

After two weekends of great audiences, City of Angels closed this past Sunday. Closings are always bittersweet, and this one was no different. I'm gonna miss this cast and the shenanigans we got into - especially during Buddy's brunch scene, my favorite part of the show.

In the show, movie producer/director Buddy Fidler holds a brunch party and invites all of Hollywood's elite. Most of the cast is onstage for about ten minutes, acting as party guests talking and mingling with each other, as other scenes happened downstage of us. We were to act like our characters would act at a real party. The director gave us free range to create scenarios and interactions for our characters... and things got interesting by the end of the run!

My character Gilbert got into the habit of flirting with all the beautiful women of the party. Every day I found a new pickup line and would, in Gilbert fashion, nervously and innocently deliver it to the ladies. One of my first (and to this date favorite) pickup lines was "I want to paint you green and spank you like a disobedient avocado"...... Yeah, let that process. I still can't believe that's an actual line someone has used. Let's just say, Gilbert got pushed away for that one.

At the top of the run, Gilbert got rejected the majority of the time, but by the end of the run, some of the women started hitting on him (I guess you can never underestimate the power of geeky charm). I looked forward to trying out a new line every night and to seeing how my cast mates would respond. By closing, other people started using their own pickup lines on their character's crushes. The scene got more and more unpredictable and exciting as the run progressed. I never knew what was going to happen and who was going to end up talking to whom that particular day.

For your pleasure, here are some of my other favorite lines:

I wanna live in your socks, so I can be with you every step of the way.
I just went to the doctor, and he said I was missing some Vitamin U.
Wanna go halfsies on a baby?
Your body is 65% water, and I'm thirsty.
Do you work at Starbucks? Because I like you a latte.

To everyone involved in City of Angels: It truly must've hurt when you all fell from heaven. Thanks for the memories.
